A motion will come before the Chanhassen City Council tonight (November 23) nominating Greg and Colleen Fletcher and St. Hubert School and Church for environmental excellence awards. If the council passes it, the Fletchers and a representative from St. Hubert will receive their awards at the Dec. 24, 2009, city council meeting.
As stated in a report by Chanhassen Environmental Resource Specialist Jill Sinclair, the Fletchers installed a new driveway this summer using permeable pavers for their new driveway and patio area. According to their application, they wanted a surface that was environmentally friendly to Lotus Lake and the watershed. The permeable pavers allow rain and stormwater runoff from the house to inflitrate the ground where iit lands instead of draining directly into Lotus Lake.
St. Huberts School and Church has made a number of environmental changes to its buildings and their maintenance this year, according to Sinclair's report. They increased their recycling, discontinued the use of Styrofoam cups, switched to green cleanerrs throughout the buildings, changed their lighting to environmentally friendly products, and are donating the revenue from aluminum can collections to their student club, the 'Green Team'.
