Arts council in Chanhassen
August 10, 2007 - 1:27pm — FAdams
Local advocates for the arts met in Chanhassen in late June to discuss the possibility of forming an arts council in the city. Ringleader Paula Atkins said it was a “diverse group [that] was fairly representative of all areas of the arts,” including several visual artists, two music teachers, and several representatives of the performing arts, all from Chanhassen. “I was impressed by the enthusiasm of the people who attended the meeting,” she said. They were of one mind. “All those in attendance agree that it is time for Chanhassen to have an organization that focuses on the arts in our community,” Atkins revealed. They plan to meet again later this month or in September to brainstorm and prioritize. Initial discussions included: *Providing opportunities for area artists to connect (networking) *Community enrichment, such as providing opportunities for all ages to take part in the arts *Providing a venue for the arts in the Chanhassen area *Gather information on funding sources *Communicate with city staff, in the interest of forming a partnership For more information, e-mail patkins@goldengate.net. Back to page topI was in Fergus Falls this weekend watching a showing of the musical "Beauty and the Beast," sponsored by A Center for the Arts, the full-time arts organization in Fergus.
The talent was great, and the set was awesome. It would be neat in Chanhassen if we had a full-time arts community with which people could interact, something to complement the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres.

Back to page topAt the August 22 meeting it was decided we would bring Laura Zabel from Springboard For The Arts to speak to our group. If people would like more information about Springboard, their url is www.springboardforthearts.org. Laura will be meeting with our group September 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Chanhassen Library. I hope everyone can be there.
Come and get in on the ground floor of a new organization connecting and enriching our arts community.

The next meeting for individuals to learn about efforts currently underway to establish an arts council in Chanhassen has been set for Thursday, October 18, at 7 p.m. in the library.
Pending the community’s interest and involvement, topics of discussion may include future programming, an identity that the group might develop, fundraising efforts, and possible partnerships.
They’ll likely set a target date sometime in the spring to make a splash onto the community scene. This may be in the form of a play or musical performance.
Nobody knows. Who, where, what and when are questions that need to be answered.
During a meeting in the library last week with the executive director of Springboard for the Arts, Chanhassen residents Paula Atkins and Betsy LaPlatt had their questions answered about how to move forward.
Atkins and LaPlatt have been instrumental in pushing forward the idea of a Chanhassen arts council. Laura Zabel from Springboard for the Arts gave them advice about developing the organization, defining a vision, determining a specific identity, and gaining community support.
She instructed Atkins and LaPlatt to make efforts to get a core group of between eight and 10 core people, and when that’s done to “take it slow” and “do things with a good plan,” in order to avoid burn-out and also to generate widespread community support.
As good and beneficial as the idea of having an arts council in Chanhassen might be, if there isn’t community support, there’s not much use in pursuing it, Zabel said. Atkins, president of the Chaska Valley Community Theatre and a 13-year member of the board, said she’ll try to get a listing for the Chanhassen Arts Council into the city’s next community directory; LaPlatt plans to design and hang posters in local artist haunts and around the city prior to the next meeting.
