Are the Vikings a Super Bowl favorite now that Brett Favre is on the team? What happens if he's injured in the third game and can't play for eight weeks? Are you going out to buy a Favre jersey?
The Star Tribune is reporting today (July 15) that Favre said "he'll give the Vikings an answer on whether he'll play by the July 30 start of training camp."
MinnPost points out: "In sports, it's Favremania: In anticipation of Brett Favre joining the Vikings, the Star-Tribune has already created a page for him.) David Brauer points us to Editor and Publisher, which couldn't resist punning, calling the move "A Bridge to Favre." In the meanwhile, on the Strib's Vikings page today, there are two stories devoted to the quarterback, one saying that Favre is the only thing that might keep Favre from joining the Vikes, the other informing us that he has been working out his throwing arm.) Compared with the Pioneer Press, however, this all seems a bit restrained. By my count, on its Vikings Page, there are no less than eight stories dedicated to Favre" (http://www.minnpost.com/dailyglean/2009/07/17/10323/daily_glean_its_offi...).
So Brett Favre isn't going to play for the Minnesota Vikings next season. Now the question is whether or not he'll just go away or keep on putting himself into the spotlight.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees said in USA Today on June 28 there's no doubt "that Brett Favre is coming back" for the season opener on Sept. 9.
The Vikings won their first pre-season game against the lowly St. Louis Rams. T-Jack didn't look very good. Sage Rosenfels wasn't all that good. Of the three quarterbacks who played, rookie QB Joe Webb was most impressive. The O-line didn't look very good, either.
Favre en route? According to NFL Network, Brett Favre is on a plane headed to the Twin Cities. The football network further reports that a Vikings spokesman told NFL Network that the Vikings organization has “no comment” on the rumor. Brett Favre and the Vikings looked better in their recent pre-season victory, but that offensive line still looked shaky. Two fumbles from Favre revealed even more weakness.
Look for lots of blitzes from the Saints on opening day. I'm sure they would love to end his season before it even begins, just like they ended Sidney Rice's season.
Do you know who else was shaky? T-Jack. He looked like the same, indecisive, three-and-out quarterback from two seasons ago. Sage Rosenfels, on the other hand, was solid.
