Vikings football

What a way to begin the season for the Minnesota Vikings.

The NFL has granted the team a 24-hour extension to sell out Sunday’s season-opener against Atlanta. The team announced this morning that it has 1,700 tickets remaining.

Do you plan to attend? Will you watch? Why? What are the Vikings' prospects this season?

I'll be in outstate Minnesota on family business, so hopefully I won't be subject to a television blackout.

I'd rather attend a Minnesota Vixen game than spend three hours watching the Vikes muddle through a game against the Falcons and quite possibly come out on the losing end of such an epic battle.

The Vikings always seem to have trouble against the Falcons. Then again, who don't they have trouble with?

Sounds like the game will be on television now that they have finally sold enough tickets. KMSP (Ch. 9), the local Fox affiliate, bought the remaining 1,200 tickets.

Who knows?

Maybe the Vikings' special teams unit will not allow huge returns; the offense won't turn over the ball on their opening drive; a star wide receiver will emerge; the running game will take off; the offensive line will not break down; and the pass defense will come together.

Maybe they'll win.

Tell us what you think. Pretend this is a big card table, or poker table if you'd rather, that we're all sitting around.

The Vikings came out ready to play against a team that isn't very good yesterday, and it was good to see them win.

It'll be interesting to watch them develop over the course of this year.

A great moment came when Troy Williamson caught that pass over the middle, got blasted by the defender and held onto the ball.

A not-so-great moment came when Tarvaris Jackson, who completed 13 of 23 passes for 163 yards, missed receivers Williamson and Sidney Rice when they broke open on deep routes.

Next up is Detroit at 3 p.m. on Sunday. We might even get to see Mewelde Moore, who was inactive for last week's game. Chester Taylor has a bruised oblique.

Interesting news I found in the Star Tribune: "Local Fox affiliate KMSP, which bought the remaining 400 tickets for Sunday's game and thus helped the Vikings avoid a blackout, was rewarded with a 28.0 rating and 62 share for the telecast, meaning 469,952 households tuned into the Vikings victory."

Was the Vikes performance against Detroit pathetic, or what?

How can you win games if your receivers don't get open, your quarterback doesn't have the abilitiy to throw the ball accurately downfield, and your defenders can't stop passes to the middle of the field?

And then they almost won! What a fraudulent victory that would have been.

It was nice to see the offense finally score a touchdown on Sunday; and the running game was OK; but the pass defense, offensive play calling and pass protection left a lot to be desired.

Trade rumors circulating. The Start Tribune is reporting that the Tampa Bay Bucs want to acquire running back Mewelde Moore from the Vikings. Maybe we can get somebody for the right side of our line.

In other news, Vikings owner Ziggy Wilf has full faith and confidence in coach Brad Childress. At least somebody does. Childress is now 7-13 as a head coach. The Vikings have lost three in a row overall and are 3-11 in their past 14 games.

What seems to me to be poor coaching, together with dropped passes by the wide receivers, average play from Tarvaris Jackson and inconsistent pass defense means what?

The Vikings are still winning.

Adrian Peterson is awesome. I don't think there's much point in arguing that somebody else should be the new identity of the Vikings.

By the way, watching Williamson catch that long pass was satisfying.

Let's put the nail in the coffin now. 24-17 with 8:30 left in the fourth quarter. This is a game I actually think the Vikings deserve to win.

What's your take on it?

Wow. Adrian Peterson rocks. 31-17 after that brilliant A.P. touchdown run. We need this guy to stay healthy. 231 yards rushing so far with 2:49 in the fourth remaining.

And just to make things exciting, the Vikings let down their guard, allow the Bears to tie the game, and then rely on Longwell to kick a walk-off field goal.

"Come watch our defense stop the other team's running game," isn't exactly a surefire sales pitch. The Vikings seemed faceless and adrift, according to Tom Powers in his column today in the Pioneer Press.

Rookie running backs aside, it's hard for the Vikings to compete against the best that the NFL has to offer without a quarterback who can complete passes. I wonder if we're facing a black-out against Philadelphia next Sunday.

The Vikes got a win.

Any comments?

It's not like they were impressive. I mean the Raiders are not a good team, and Tarvaris Jackson still didn't even pass for over 200 yards.

As Mark Craig says in the Star Tribune, "Whoop-de-stinking-doo."

"Two plays in the first half overshadowed anything else Jackson did while playing indoors against a lousy opponent at home. First, Jackson floated an interception into double coverage in the end zone on first-and-goal from the 3-yard line early in the first quarter. Then, with 53 seconds left in the half, he held the ball far too long, got clobbered and fumbled it away."

What's Jackson going to do against the NY Giants? The Giants lead the NFL in sacks with 34.

Vikings knock Giants down to size

Wow. Fans have been waiting all year for Tarvaris Jackson to step up and play like a professional quarterback, and against the Giants he did.

Wouldn't you say?

Even with Chester Taylor not rushing for very many yards, because the Vikes had a passing game, they were able to move the ball down the field.

Jackson only has 129 yards passing in the fourth quarter, but he has thrown one touchdown and no interceptions. It's not like he's awesome, but he's making good decisions.

How important is the matchup against the Lions next week? Anybody planning to be at the game?

More than 3,000 tickets remain for the Vikings-Lions matchup in the Metrodome on Sunday, which means the Vikings are once again facing a blackout. Sunday's game is scheduled to air locally on KMSP Channel 9, but only if all tickets are sold by noon Thursday.

No blackout

Will the Vikings' defense be Kitnatized like they were last time Detroit Lions quarterback Jon Kitna picked them apart?

We'll all have the chance to watch, as the game won't be blacked out from local television. Three corporate sponsors stepped up to purchase the remaining Vikings tickets.

It will be broadcast on KMSP (Ch.9), as KMSP joined U.S. Bank and Superclean/Factory Value Parts to buy the 2,100 remaining tickets, according to a Star Tribune report.

The Vikings have two more home games, Dec. 17 against Chicago and Dec. 23 against Washington.

A win is a win, and five wins in a row is hard to argue against.

However, I'm left wondering what happened to the Vikings that we watched destroy San Diego and New York.

Coach Childress is a psychology major, so I'm wondering if he's playing head games with the rest of the NFL.

Is he experimenting with the Vikings, so they do just enough to win these games without looking exceptional in hopes that the rest of the teams in the league will underestimate the Vikings?

I know he can't control whether or not Tarvaris Jackson throws interceptions or  sees open receivers, or if the defense creates turnover. But I'm wondering if there's an 'A' list of plays that we use when we play good teams and a 'B' list of plays that we use against teams that aren't very good.

What do you think?

Long-suffering Vikings fans who shelled out big bucks to be at the game were treated to a blow-out.

Do we hope they get to the playoffs, so we can be prolong the inevitable?
