"You Only Live Once" by The Strokes. The lyrics are a bit abstract, but all kind of relate to the title in some way -- basically saying there are all kinds of things in this world that can leave you disillusioned, but you can choose to walk right past them and maintain your own good vibe, sort of espousing a live-and-let-live attitude. And the music is amazing -- the saucy beat and good-time attack of the band really lift you up. I don't know if there's such a thing as a skip-strut, but that's what the song makes me want to do. Maybe I'm getting too old, or maybe I'm getting old enough. I don't know what music is "cool" these days, I really am not very musical, but I do know when I hear something I like. I know I'm not a Rap Fan. I'm sure I don't have "an album or a song (a guilty pleasure, so to speak) that I wouldn't want my friends to find out I enjoy listening to" My friends know me, they accept me in spite of that. Many of them know I like good sea food, mexican food, chocolate, and a lot of other stuff and some know I crave White Castle hamburgers sometimes. As long as I don't expect them to crave or even eat White Castles, why would I care if they know I eat them. The same holds true for music, I like a lot of different kinds, but I think variety is a good thing. Listen to music you like, try something new, but if you don't like it, don't listen to it to be cool. That wouldn't be "cool" would it? I'm old enough that sometimes I put on an old sweatshirt because I'm too cool. What ever music you listen too, dance like no body is watching.

Cyndi Lauper may have been cool in 1984, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that has changed a bit by now. Problem is, I still really dig about a half-dozen of her songs, and I guess I always will. "Time After Time" and "Money Changes Everything" sound as good to me today as they did a quarter-century ago ... just don't tell my friends.

"Rhinestone Cowboy" by Glen Campbell will always be a favorite of mine. One of my first memories is of singing with that song in the car on the way to the rodeo with my parents. My mom said I always sang "Backseat Rodeo" instead of "Star-spangled Rodeo". Probably because I was playing with my plastic horses in the backseat.

In Sinead O'Conner's song "Black Boys on Mopeds" there's a verse that goes...

I guess given the current state of the music industry the artists don't have a whole lot of options. I know that I haven't lost any respect for artists such as Wilco or Kings of Leon for selling their music to commercials. It seems that most radio stations refuse to play a variety of music, they stick with the same few songs/artists and MTV & VH1 are no longer music channels, so what choice do they have. They need a way for their music to be heard, and let's face it, a lot of people watch TV. I know I hear more new music on TV than I'd hear on most radio stations (89.3 The Current excluded, they rock). What artist has TV introduced you to?
