Softball no-no: Eagan sophomore pitcher Sara Moulton fired a no-hitter on Thursday as the top-ranked Wildcats blanked Chaska 3-0.
Eagan got a run in the fifth inning and added two more in the sixth.
The Hawks are now 6-14 going into the playoffs and finished 3-11 in the Lake.

The athletes did very well

The athletes did very well at this chilly meet.

Derek Jerde jumped 6-7 to win the high jump by 3 inches over Billy Buffington of Wayzata and Mike Niesen of Sartell.

Paul Yerhot finished third in the 200 dash, running 22.79 seconds.

Ben Sathre finished 12th in the 1,600 with 4:32.29.

The Chaska boys 4x800 relay team took 14th at the meet with a time of 8:33.77.

Chaska’s 4x800 relay team finished eighth with a time of 10:00.52. Lauren Johnson, Jenna Urick, Claire Bulat and Nicole Franz comprised the relay.

Hawk jumper Lauren Rothschiller finished 11th in the triple jump with a leap of 32-4.

Jena Franz cleared 10 feet in the pole vault to enter a three-way tie for fourth place.

Lauren Rice of Holy Family was fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:28.00.

The girls Class 4A state

The girls Class 4A state basketball tournament bracket is set, following the seeding meeting on Sunday.

Chaska received the fifth seed, and plays perennial power Osseo in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 12 at noon.

A win puts the Hawks in the semifinals on Thursday, March 13 in a noon game, likely against Minneapolis South.

Chaska is making its fifth state tournament trip under coach Bob Downs. The Hawks went in 1982, 1983 and 1990, and finished runner-up in the Class 3A tournament in 1998. The Hawks lost 66-33 to Minneapolis North in the '98 title game.

Osseo made nine state tournaments from 1987 to 2000 under coach Dave Thorpe, and won the Class 2A (big school) title in 1989 and was the runner-up to Bloomington Jefferson in 1994.

Osseo was the runner-up to Hastings in 1996, and won the Class 4A title by defeating Eastview 80-53 in 2000.

Osseo qualified for state in 2004 with coach Warren Bolin, and Mark Arzdorf took the team to state last season, where the Orioles lost 56-47 to Minneapolis South in the quarterfinals.

The Orioles are 24-5 on the season, with losses to Rogers, Eastview, Hopkins, and two setbacks to Centennial in Northwest Suburban League play.

Osseo topped until then undefeated Centennial 62-58 in the Section 5-4A finals.

The jazz/funk competition

The jazz/funk competition takes place on Friday, Feb. 15 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
The Hawks compete in the Class 3A high kick/precision portion of the state meet, set for Saturday, Feb. 16.

Here's the schedule for the Hawks:
- Doors open to the public at 11:15 a.m.
- The Class 2A and 3A qualifying competition runs from 2:15 to 4:30 p.m.
- Class 2A finalists are announced at 4:45 p.m. and the Class 3A finalists are announced at 5 p.m.
- The welcome and National Anthem starts at 5:40 p.m., followed by the Class A finals and awards presentations.
- The Class 2A and 3A finals and awards presentations start at 7:15 p.m.

Holy Family’s dance team

Holy Family’s dance team took first place in the Minnesota River Conference Jazz/Funk competition at Belle Plaine on Friday night.

This is the first year the Minnesota River Conference has held dance team competitions. In the high-kick portion of the competition, Holy Family finished in third place.

Chaska had just one rated wrestler in The Guillotine wrestling publication’s preseason high school Class 3A rankings.

Not any more.

Four Hawks are in the latest ratings, released Friday.

Hawk eighth-grader Gavin Larsen is ninth in the 103-pound division.

R.J. Hallman, a freshman, is rated seventh at 112 pounds.

Both Hawk captains are rated, as senior Cabe Miller is eighth in the 135-pound division, and junior Pat Smith is No. 7 at 140 pounds.

Rated wrestlers at Saturday’s Chaska invitational include:

Buffalo’s Matt Jeska (No. 6 at 171) and Brandon Ordorff (No. 7 at 189).

Champlin Park is No. 8 in the Class A team ratings, led by No. 1-rated heavyweight Sam Maresh. Champlin also brings Skyler Vongkaysone (No. 10 at 103), Mic-Ryan Freeman (No. 6 at 112). Josh Wiseman (No. 2 at 140), Miles Camarata (No. 5 at 152) and Ed Cotton (No. 4 at 215).

Hopkins, which received ratings consideration in the Guillotine team rankings, has Zach Enrico (No. 9 at 160) and Alex Agate (No. 4 at 171).

Minnetonka has no rated wrestlers, but returns a strong team, including junior 160-pounder Colton Gleason, who tied the school record for career victories on Dec. 1.

Minnetonka ended up with fourth place in the team tournament, after a 6-1 loss to Rochester Mayo on Thursday afternoon.

Aria Lambert stayed undefeated on the season with the Skippers' lone victory, at first singles.

Edina won the title for the 11th year in a row, with a 7-0 win over Mounds View.

Lambert plays Hibbing/Chisholm sophomore Hillary Bumgarden in the first round of the state Class 2A singles tournament at 8 a.m. on Friday, at the U of M.

Chaska defeated four teams

Chaska defeated four teams to win the Alexandria Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.

The Hawks swept Renville County West 25-16, 25-15 and breezed past Bemidji 25-9, 25-19. Chaska then downed the host team 25-18, 25-22 and topped Wayzata in the title match 25-15, 25-17.

The Hawks are 14-6 overall going into the Lake Conference finale Tuesday, Oct. 16 at home against Lakeville South.

Chaska ended up 13th at the Apple Valley tourney, dropping two matches on Friday to Bethlehem Academy of Faribault and Lake Conference rival Burnsville.

The Hawks rebounded with a pair of tiebreaker victories on Saturday. Chaska defeated Moorhead 25-12, 23-25, 15-4 and rallied to down Lord Selkirk Academy of Manitoba 19-25, 25-22, 16-14.

No. 2-rated Shakopee defeated No. 1 Lakeville North 23-25, 25-23, 15-12
for the tournament title.

Eagan topped Marshall 25-20, 25-20 for third place, Eden Prairie defeated Bethlehem Academy 25-17, 25-17 in the fifth-place match and Blaine edged Apple Valley 27-25, 24-26, 15-12 for seventh place.

Burnsville beat Alexandria 25-21, 25-21 for ninth place, Belle Plaine topped Hibbing 25-19, 25-19 for 11th place and Moorhead bested Lake of the Woods 25-23, 25-21 for 15th place.

The Hawks, now 7-4 on the season, host Bloomington Kennedy on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
