Dellwo called the 85 grams

Dellwo called the 85 grams of "suspected cocaine" that were seized “a fairly significant seizure amount for our area.”
It weighs more than three ounces and amounts to eight-and-a-half times the level of cocaine that is chargeable as a first-degree felony offense under state law, said Carver County Sheriff Byron ‘Bud’ Olson.

Four agents from SWMDTF and two deputies from the Carver County Sheriff’s Office took part in the bust, which happened when the suspect vehicle, driven by Mathaniel Jude Mendez, pulled into the pre-determined “meet spot” at 6:50 p.m. Monday, March 10. They were near the intersection of Lake Drive and Great Plains Boulevard in Chanhassen.

Read more about this arrest in this week's edition of the Chanhassen Villager.

Our neighbors to the north

Our neighbors to the north are taking a toughter stance against marijuana.

The New York Times reported yesterday that Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced new legal and spending measures against drug use and distribution.

In 2005, the government, then led by the Liberal Party, introduced legislation to eliminate criminal penalties for possessing small amounts of marijuana. The bill did not pass Parliament before the election that brought Harper and the Conservatives to power.

Harper said the government would spend about $64 million on antidrug campaigns and increased enforcement, including mandatory sentences for dealers and smugglers. There will also be increased coordination with the United States, he said.
