From the House of

From the House of Representatives Public Information Office:

"A bill that would drastically change the ways schools are funded has a long ways to go before it potentially hits the House floor next year."

"Rep. Mindy Greiling (DFL-Roseville) said the bill, HF4178, would hopefully be considered first thing next year. No action was taken after the bill was heard by the House K-12 Education Finance Committee."

"A companion bill, SF3828, sponsored by Sen. Terri Bonoff (DFL-Minnetonka), awaits action by the Senate Finance Committee."

"The bill would change the way school districts are funded by simplifying the pupil count for schools and, in effect, fund all-day kindergarten. The bill would also eliminate property tax levies for general education revenue so that it would be provided through state aid, and it would establish an agriculture credit for school bonds."

"Greiling, the division chairwoman, said the bill could be scalable, depending on the amount of funding that was available."

District cancels logo

District cancels logo presentation

Nancy Kracke from District 112 cancelled a presentation of the Chanhassen High School Storm logo at the Chanhassen City Council meeting on Monday after conferring with city staff and scheduling to give it at a later date.

She said on Tuesday morning that the district is standing by their logo, but Jostens, designers of the 'inspired' copy, is checking to ensure that the baseball association OKs the school district's use of it.

"We want to be cautious and respectful," she said.

Uh-oh. Northern Minnesota? That's a little too close for comfort. Time to come up with a new logo?

An alumni of Stephen/Argyle (recent nine-man football state champs for the fifth year in a row) sent us an e-mail noting this northern Minnesota team's logo.

What's the mascot going to

What's the mascot going to look like, a thunder cloud with lightning?

What weather-related sports metaphors will the sports writers and announcers use?

I can just hear the football announcer inciting the crowd to cheer when the opposition has the ball on third down: "Let's make some third down thunder!"

Very cool!! What better mascot for a Minnesota Team than the weather! Great creativity and thought went into this. Kudos to those who came up with the idea and creation.

The new fight song has a lot of verses to commit to memory:

I'm having trouble with 'In stalwart step, they're nighing.'

The line 'Cheer for Chanhassen' is nice.

And what else could youdo but hail the Storm!

Listen to the Chan Storm's fight song here and follow along...

Chanhassen Storm
"The Victors"

Now for a cheer they are here, triumphant!
Here they come with banners flying,
In stalwart step they're nighing,
With shouts of vict'ry crying,
We hurrah, hurrah, we greet you now, Hail!

Far we their praises sing
For the glory and fame they've brought us
Loud let the bells them ring
For here they come with banners flying
Far we their praises tell
For the glory and fame they've brought us
Loud let the bells them ring
For here they come with banners flying
Here they come, Hurrah!

Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan
The leaders and best!
Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Chanhassen,
The champions of the West!

We cheer them again
We cheer and cheer again
For Chanhassen, we cheer for Chanhassen
We cheer with might and main
We cheer, cheer, cheer
With might and main we cheer!

Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Chanhassen,
The champions of the West!

The first question was for an increase in funding for day-to-day operations, i.e. teachers, classroom supplies, paraprofessional classroom support, science kits, utility bills, payroll, etc.

The increase is for an additional $436.29 per pupil, generating an additional $3.8 million annually.

The second question was to extend the district's technology levy until 2017 at the same levy rate.

In the school board election, eight candidates filed for four seats: Doug Anderson, Alice Everett, Calvin Litsey, Paul Luehr, Renee Schubbe, Lisa Wagner, Karen Walkowski and William Wenmark. School Board members are elected at-large to serve four-year terms.

We are already surrounded by birds. We have the Chaska Hawks, EP Eagles, MW White Hawks, to just name a few.

Lets try something different. There have been many other suggestions that are not birds. Some pretty interesting. The Storm. That is definetly original. Cougars - they eat birds. Even the Maple Leaf is at least not another bird.

Granted the above sounds quite eligant, but do we really need an eligant mascot?

Hate to say it but just think of the things other schools could tease our students about with this name.

Let me comment on the location vs name of a school. Technically, Hopkins High School is located in Minnetonka but serves several surrounding areas including parts of Golden Valley. Hazeldon does get confused with Hazeltine and I don't think our students should come to play a football game with a stigma of rehab when people mispronouce that. And I love that "egraymond" voted for his/her own ideas...very cool. Mattpet is right...leave Halloweentown to Anoka with the orange and black. And has anyone ever seen a lightning quick hound dog? Maybe at Hazeldon HS.

So now we are worried about

So now we are worried about "offending" someone by calling a high school located in Chanhassen by the name Chanhassen High School. I think we should be more concerned about condescending comments such as "Maybe our friends down the hill should consult a map". The Chanhassen High Maple Leafs would be a fitting name, one that carries some pride and honor as opposed to the Hazeltine Hound Dogs, (please). Besides, how many people in this state already get confused between Hazeldon and Hazeltine? One more thing, orange and black would be hideous school colors, what will our mascot be, a Halloween Scarecrow?
