Lacrosse quarterfinals in the books: Hawk girls, Skipper boys advance
May 12, 2008 - 11:10pm — ChanHawk
The lacrosse season is winding down, but the action is not. Chaska's girls team scored a mild upset over Hopkins with an 8-7 victory in double-overtime on Monday at the Royals' field. Hopkins was the fourth-seeded team in Section 6, while the Hawks were seeded fifth. The Hawks' spoils of victory? The team will square off against defending champion Eden Prairie at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School. EP blasted Cooper 17-5 on Monday. Wayzata got past Minnetonka 9-6 and Armstrong beat Maple Grove 11-3 in the other quarterfinal games.
Chaska's boys squad tangled at Eden Prairie on Monday, but the Eagles proved too powerful, scoring a 13-6 victory. The Hawks had the first two good scoring chances in the game, as Kevin Hartwigsen and Mark Scott each had open looks at the net. But EP got on the board first with a point-blank goal from Ryan Miller, off a pass from Benner Schleider. The Hawks got the goal back when Scott found senior Tyler Boll, who scored following an Eaglke screen violation. But the Eagles netted three more before the quarter was up. Schleider scored his 19th goal of the season, set up another score, and Dan Jones got the ball in the Hawk net just before the clock expired. EP's P.J. Jepsen scored off a pass from Jones to make it 5-1 in the first minute of the second quarter. Chaska got back in the game by scoring the next two goals. Junior attacker Pat Blake knocked the ball in through a scrum in front of the net, and sniped a shot to the corner of the net for his 19th and 20th goals of the season. EP capped the first half with three more goals: Matt Murphy from Schleider, one by Jepsen and another by Jones. Chaska finished the season 3-9 overall, while the Eagles advance to Wednesday's semifinals to face Wayzata, which routed Armstrong 14-4 on Monday. Top seed Minnetonka took out Hopkins 10-3 and Cooper topped Maple Grove 7-4 in other quarterfinal action. The Skippers and Maple Grove play in the semis at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ronninsdale Cooper High School, with Wayzata and EP starting at 5 p.m.
