Minnetonka's boys hockey team had lost to Hopkins and topped Hopkins during the regular season.
So it was only fitting that the Classic Lake Conference rivals would fight to the finish in the Section 6AA semifinals on Saturday at Braemar Arena.
The Royals scored the only goal of the third period to tie the game 3-3. But the Skippers won it in overtime with a wristshot goal from senior Jake Gardiner.
Tommy Lundquist, Gardiner and Justin Erhart scored in the second period for the Skippers.
Paul Giel and Nate Jensen each had two assists for Minnetonka, with Sam Coatta adding one. Skipper goalie Jim Kruger made 23 saves, while Hopkins netminder Alex Fons finished with 48 saves.
The Skippers (24-3 overall) will play in the section finals on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis. Game time is 6 p.m.
Eden Prairie and Benilde-St. Margaret's play in the other 6AA semifinal on Saturday afternoon at Bloomington Ice Garden.
