The city's cemetery is undergoing an upgrade.

"Our goal was to install an entry monument to identify it," said Chanhassen City Office Manager Karen Engelhardt of the Chanhassen Pioneer Cemetery located off Galpin Boulevard.

The city acquired it in 1987, but Engelhardt said the cemetery is widely believed to have first been established in 1861. "I think there are a couple graves that are older than 1861," she said.

Many of the city's founders are buried under the roughly 800 graves in the cemetery.  Columns, an archway and landscaping will now mark the site. Previously, it was not marked. Work will be completed by Memorial Day, Engelhardt hopes.
