Tired of what some believe is a high tax burden coupled with an unresponsive county government, St. Bonafacius city officials have kicked around the idea of leaving Hennepin County for the greener pastures of Carver County. While no formal secession plan has been developed, the idea of jumping counties has been discussed at recent meetings of the city council. Rick Weible, mayor of the town of 2,300, said there are several reasons the idea of secession has surfaced, ranging from Hennepin County taxes to lack of transportation upgrades at Highway 7 and County Road 82.He said one factor that will determine whether the secession idea goes anywhere is how Hennepin County officials respond to concerns. Carver County officials haven’t been involved in any formal discussion regarding St. Boni’s possible secession. “It was flattering that they want to join us but it would be difficult to pull off,” Carver County Administrator David Hemze said by phone Tuesday.— Richard Crawford
