14,828 view 'extreme' races at Canterbury

Canterbury Park’s Extreme Race Day On Sunday featured horses racing at unique distances, camels galloping down the stretch, ostriches zig-zagging to the finish line, and a pair of $50,000 stakes.

Playing to a crowd of 14,828, the second annual event included Canterbury’s shortest race at 100 yards, the Dash in a Flash, won by Wheely Fast; and its longest race at 2 and 1/16 miles, won by Lord Kipling.

Wheely Fast, a 4-year-old quarter horse, was ridden by Jerry Winters, trained by Ron Winget II, and is owned by Al and Claire Lundgren of Plymouth. Lord Kipling won by 8 1/2 lengths under jockey Adolfo Morales. Center Hills Farm of Springdale, Ark., owns the 5-year-old thoroughbred, trained by Amber Blair.

The $50,000 Brian Barenscheer Juvenile Stakes, run at 5 1/2 furlongs for 2-year-olds, was won by Proud Jefe. Jockey Paul Nolan brought the son of Proud Citizen from off the pace, passed pace-setter Border Cuvee, and then drew off.

“How much did he win by?” asked Nolan as he returned to the winners’ circle. The answer was 5 and 3/4 lengths and in a final time of 1:05.28. Proud Jefe is trained by Thomas Amoss and owned by Gold Mark Farm. Proud Jefe paid $4.20 to win.

Tiganello won the $50,000 John Bullit Stakes at 1 mile and 1/16th on the turf under Canterbury Park Hall of Fame rider Scott Stevens. Trainer Hector Magana and owners Richard and Karen Papiese of Dyer, Ind., claimed the 7-year-old for $62,500 at Arlington Park on June 14.

“He picked this one out,” said Magana of the owner. “We argued a little bit because of the 9-month layoff but he did the right thing,” Tiganello, bred in Germany, paid $26.60 to win.
