The first of nine races, each exclusively for fillies and mares, begins at 1:30 p.m. This day of horses and hope, presented by MHC Associates, includes three stakes races with the feature being the $75,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes.
Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation helps financially distressed individuals and their families who have been touched by breast cancer. Since 2001, Hope Chest has provided more than $1 million in support for more than 2,000 breast cancer patients and their families in the Twin Cities area. Hope Chest offers emergency assistance programs to provide financial assistance for rent, utilities, transportation and delivered meals to families.
“Canterbury Park, its employees, and horsemen are pleased to host Fillies Race for Hope,” Canterbury Park President Randy Sampson said. “Not only will we showcase racing in Minnesota, we have an opportunity to be part of an event that gives back to the community.”
More than 500 breast cancer survivors are expected to gather on the racetrack after the fifth race to participate in a Survivors’ Walk that ends in the Canterbury winners’ circle. “We encourage all race fans to dress in pink for this special day to show their support,” Sampson said.
More than 100 items have been donated for a silent auction. Other options to contribute to Hope Chest include purchasing a pink horseshoe for the Wall of Hope, a Lady Slipper Smash, the event’s signature cocktail, or Fillies Race for Hope apparel.
